Disturbing to Believe This

Most Christians are knowledgeable about the events of Holy Week. For as long as I remember, I have known the crucifixion story.  I did not focus too much on the horror that must have taken place, but rather Judas’s part in betraying Jesus and then Christ’s final words on the cross.  I know he was beaten, had a crown of thorns, and was spit on and whipped, but I never let my mind dwell on those facts.  Films and even mega Hollywood movies have depicted the horrific suffering, I have not watched those.  Why then am I giving it so much thought as this Holy Week is coming soon?

Both of my sons are suffering serious long-standing health issues and one daughter-in-law is currently facing surgery.  Pain and suffering are in my prayers and seemingly my waking and sleeping thoughts.  In deep thought, I pondered the real extent of our Lord’s pain and suffering.  It was graphically horrendous and at times indescribable.  He was human. The pain was real!

John 19:36 “For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, Not a bone of Him shall be broken.”…but we know Jesus was nailed to a cross, literally spikes driven into the wrist area of His hands and into His crossed feet. He was whipped with such vehemence that His flesh was torn from His body and His beard was ripped from His face. The crown of thorns was woven from euphorbia milli, (see photo).  The thorns pushed two or more inches into his head.

Why did God allow this?  Because He sent His beloved Son to save us from our sins, and suffered and died for that salvation. His LOVE and sacrifice were unconditional. Know that His pain was for YOU. His love is for YOU. Find comfort in knowing His loving arms wrap around you in your health or your suffering and truly He understands. He will never leave you…ever!
