Easter Monday

Our liturgical calendar designates the day after Easter as Easter Monday.  I have always been a bit baffled about the meaning of this.   Nothing wrong with continuing our Easter celebration for another day, but then we’ll actually be doing this for the weeks to come.

The bible doesn’t tell us of any particular event that happened on the day after Jesus’ resurrection.  But, different Christian traditions have established ways of celebrating the day.  In the Catholic tradition, it is “Monday of the Angel.”  It’s a day to focus on the words of the angel to the women, “He is not here, he is risen.”  The angel then told the women to go and tell others what has happened.  It’s a good reminder that Christians still can be the voice that tells others about the good news of Christ’s resurrection.

A few other traditional celebrations for Easter Monday include Dingus Day, a celebration with a large gathering and polka festival.  Another is Wet Monday, when siblings or spouses wake each other up by pouring buckets of water on each other.  (I’ll skip that one.)  Some countries observe Monday with a solemn procession; others with Easter egg rolling competitions.

I’ll just keep it simple this Monday morning.  Spread the good news!  He is risen!  He is risen indeed!
