God is all good and all powerful.
Evil is all around us.
Hatred. Disease. Immorality.
If God created everything, how can these things be?
There is nothing empirical or scientific that can adequately answer that question.
Only faith.
Here’s where we might be able to build a case, if we find ourselves in such a conversation with an atheist.
Does heat exist?
Sure.
Cold?
Yes, of course.
“Cold” is the absence of heat. Scientifically speaking.
How about darkness?
Certainly.
Wrong again! “Darkness” is the absence of light.
God cannot be measured. Science can’t even explain a thought. Have we seen electricity and magnetism? Do we really understand them?
Death is not the opposite of life, only the absence of it.
Have I seen your brain?
Have I heard it, felt it, touched, or smelled it?
Deafening silence.
Then according to the established rules of “science”, you have no brain!
I guess you have to accept it on faith.
Bingo.
This “conversation” is not meant to pit science against faith. Even scientists are able to acknowledge that their research and methodologies only take them so far. God’s perfect mind is also a scientific mind. There is room for both. Our faith in Almighty God and His unconditional love transcends all human wisdom. We explore and learn about His creation constantly while we trust in His divine providence. He brings light out of darkness, life from death. We are His Easter people!
