This Little Light of Mine

We all probably remember this song from our childhood.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.

This little light of mine, I‘m gonna let it shine.

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

There were many additional verses to this Sunday school song which included “Let is shine ‘til Jesus comes”,  “Hide it under a bushel, NO!”,  “Shine all over (where ever you lived)” and my personal favorite, “Don’t let Satan (blow on your finger) it out”.

There were possibly more, but those were the verses we sang in our Sunday school. They were always done with hand gestures like holding up your pointer finger to represent the light or hiding that same finger under your cupped hand to represent the bushel. We sang it loud and we sang it proud with the exuberance that only children display when singing their hearts out.

That begs the question, do we still sing these words loud and proud? Do our actions display this childlike exuberance of letting our lights shine all over, not hiding our lights from others, not letting Satan extinguish that light and not letting Satan into our lives to diminish our love for the Lord?

This little song which delighted us as children certainly has a great message that we can live by every day of our lives. We have a wonderous example to follow…”The Light” himself who shines for us with His continuing unconditional love that we don’t deserve.  In Psalm 119:105 we read these words “Your word is a lamp unto our feet and a light for our path”. God’s model for us as the Light of the World gives us the perfect guide to how we should live. All we need to do is follow the ideal we have been shown. Thanks be to God!
