Safe Haven

Psalm 46: 1-2 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.”  These verses came to mind, as I watched in shock and terror a recent documentary about the volcano on Whakaari/White Island in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.

While tourists were transported back and forth to the island, and plumes of white floated above the island’s volcano, the eeriness crept inside me. I kept thinking, why are they hopping on those tourist vessels when you can clearly see “smoke.”  The moderator was informing us that the island had previously, every three years had an eruption and that as the tourists would be walking on the island, they would see pockets of gas bubbling or steaming, (the smoke was just natural, the commentator explained).  They needed to be careful where they walked. Many tourists were opting for the ferry ride over to the volcanic island. On December 9, 2019, forty-seven folks were on the island, when the volcano did indeed erupt again. Twenty-two people died.

For the survivors, God was their refuge and strength, as survival and helping one another became paramount. Many, still on the ferry boats, gave immediate aid to victims with intense burns.  One young man, dove under water, staying under, swimming frantically away from the island. The miracles of survival, aid, and the resources fellow tourists adapted were incredulous. Many readily thanked God for being their strength, as “the mountain” spewed into the sea.  It was unbelievable to watch.

Trouble can easily be a part of anyone’s life, the good news is God is our refuge and strength.  He loves us unconditionally and is with us through all of our trials and tribulations. Renew your strength in Him.
