Who knew that pumpkin pie was brown and not white? Maybe you see where I’m going with this…
Does anyone NOT smother their piece of pumpkin pie in Cool Whip? Isn’t that the first thing you ask for when the pie is brought out on Thanksgiving or Christmas? Spoonful upon spoonful until the pie disappears. The same thought and memory can apply to God’s lavish generosity. It covers us and our multitude of sins. His grace, forgiveness, and love are lavished upon us. “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are!” (I John 3:1).
We can recall where and when and how we have experienced that lavish love. From Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding in Cana, to the feeding of the thousands on a hillside, to the embarrassment of riches we receive in our lives. Even the poorest souls on this planet recognize the abundant blessing of a meal, a family, a shelter from the storm. We get to live an adventurous life, basking in the lavish generosity of a loving, ever-present God. There can be tremendous JOY and thankfulness for God’s “Cool Whip” generosity – and it doesn’t have to cost a cent. Laying on the ground underneath the stars, we experience the delight that God has in all creation. As he makes sure that little birds don’t have a care in the world, so much more does he keep smothering our pie with His Cool Whip! To receive that free gift of love doesn’t cost us anything; only to believe and follow. But for Him, the cost was great. His Son gave all he had, that we might have life, and have it abundantly.
Go ahead – spoon some more Cool Whip on that pumpkin pie. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord and his unbounded, unconditional love for you.
