Memorial Day

This weekend is a time of memories–a memorial for those who have gone before us.  We honor those who served our country in the military to preserve our freedoms.  We honor our ancestral family for their commitment to preserving our religious freedom and beliefs; for passing this faith to their children and grandchildren.  We honor close family and friends who are still missed after perhaps years of absence in death.

In 2004 we had occasion to visit Washington, D.C.  After attending an interment service at Arlington Cemetery for close relatives, (an impressive place a few days after Memorial Day when flags were on all graves), we visited many national historic sites.  One week after its dedication we visited the new WWII Memorial.  This place brought tears to my eyes and a deep respect in my heart for our country.  I knew many men who served our country during those years.  I was most touched by the presence at the Memorial of many veterans–some in wheelchairs–wearing caps showing their branch of service.  A sense of pride emanated from each one as they removed those caps in respect.

We take this time to be thankful to our gracious God for giving us a place to live where we feel reasonably safe and secure, and for giving us a church home where we can worship God with our brothers and sisters in Christ.  Psalm 115:1 we read, “Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.  Remember: God loves YOU unconditionally!
