In my former church, we sang a beautiful song called Just One Candle. My daughter and I sang
it a couple times for Christmas Eve services, although it was not necessarily a Christmas song. It
has a beautiful message of sharing the love of Christ around the world. Here is the first verse.
If I light just one candle and you light just one too,
And we pass the flame from wick to wick, from us to you and you.
And if we keep it going around the world you’ll see
The world is glowing with the light that came from you and me.
(This is the chorus)
With one candle, just one candle, Yes, one candle burning bright.
With one candle, just one candle, we can fill the world with light.
I was reminded of this song when I received this Facebook message from a friend. It was
written by Donna Ashworth.
If every single person who has liked you in your lifetime, were to light up on a map, it would
create the most glitteringly beautiful network you could imagine. Throw in the strangers you’ve
been kind to, the people you’ve made laugh or inspired along the way and that star-bright
network of YOU would be an impressive sight to behold. You’re so much more than you think
you are. You have done so much more than you realize. You’re trailing a bright pathway that
you don’t even know about. What a thing. What a thing indeed.
While this message focused on an individual person and what a difference they can make, the
principle of the song and the Donna Ashworth message are the same. We touch other people
in ways we don’t even know and if we were doing this in such a way as to spread the message
of God’s love, what a difference we would make.
In Mark 16:15 we read these words. “And he said to them “Go into all the world and proclaim
the gospel to the whole creation”
This is what God wants us to do. With this small act, we can show gratitude to God for His
unconditional love. What a thing. What a thing indeed!
