During a movie I was watching the other evening, a barnyard scene showed a child going out to gather eggs from the hen house. It was cute, momma chicken would flutter her wings and stand slightly, or not budge at all, when the child searched under the momma hen’s wings and located the newly laid eggs. Penguin babies are so cute, and once hatched will scuttle up to dad’s feet and perch there under his wings of protection. Feathers have a strong barb that interlocks with other barbs forming the shape of the wing and also a soft, fluffy part to keep the bird warm and safe from wind and rain.
Psalm 91:4 “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
Visualize your smallness in the realm of God’s, magnificent and vast universe. Now your storms pound you, they pour tragedy and troubles, worries hail down into your very soul, and the blustery storms of life weigh you down. What can you do? Allow that “small you” to nestle safe and warm under the shelter of His wings. God loves you so completely and so unconditionally that His wings of protection are open and waiting for you to seek Him and His comfort. With thanks and praise, you can feel His shelter at any time on any day when comfort is your need. While you are being sheltered and protected, you have plenty of time to empty your mind and allow the pure joy of God’s comforting wings to surround you with His peace and love.
Have you seen momma birds fluff up their wings before hovering over their young hatchlings? Or perhaps you have watched birds fluff up their wings so much they look like cotton balls sitting on a wire, warm and toasty on a nasty weather day. For me, that’s a reminder that I can close my eyes and God is already fluffing up His wings for the comfort I seek. Almighty God, I thank You for the shelter of Your wings and Your Holy Word reminding me to seek You.
