The Awesome Wonder of Diversity

We speak often of the acceptance of diversity in our society.  Perhaps we might go a step further and speak of the celebration of diversity.   I found this paragraph in a book by Maya Angelou and chose to share it with you this morning.

“It is time for the preachers, the rabbis, the priests and pundits, and the professors to believe in the awesome wonder of diversity so that they can teach those who follow them.  It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.  We all should understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter their color; equal in importance no matter their texture.”

A woven tapestry is an elegant creation, so many threads, so many colors and textures.  It is  a form of textile art where the different colored threads are woven by hand on a loom to produce the design.  When it’s completed, the tapestry is usually displayed on a wall for all to see.  Unlike other woven fabrics, it was never meant to be utilitarian, it was meant to be appreciated and enjoyed.

Our omnipotent God created the wondrous world on which we live.  Among his creations was mankind.  Did he make us all to look alike?  Did he give us all the same talents?  I don’t think so.  But he did create an awesome diversity of beauty and strength.  Let’s celebrate our differences.

Our wondrous God loves you unconditionally, he loves each of us unconditionally, he loves the diversity he has created.
