I’m with the Plankton

I came across the following quote while reading Pat Conroy’s novel “Beach Music.”

“On the seashore, Lucy found the text of all creation imprinted daily on the sands of Isle of Orion. By walking the beach each morning, Lucy had strengthened her belief in God and come to understand that she was no more important to the planet than the smallest plankton that floated in the invisible broth that served the softest orders of the food chain.”

I couldn’t agree more with this quote. I have found that my time on Lake Champlain provides the same strengthening for my belief. I see so many marvels; so many wondrous creatures; so many mysterious events. I know that a power so much greater than I formed the essence of these phenomena.

I gratefully acknowledge that power and call him God. I recently listened to a conversation between my husband and a friend who does not believe in God. I felt the urge to jump into the conversation and make all my cogent arguments, but Rich was doing a great job.  She was not looking for answers. She was not going to change her mind.

However, later in the evening, she and I were speaking about some other topic in which the belief in God came into the conversation. I immediately spoke up and said, “I believe in God. There is no other explanation for the wondrous world in which we live. Even if you are convinced that creation began with a big bang, some Power needed to start the bang. I give that credit to God.”

Letting God be responsible for the weather and so much more, allows me to rest in His arms and count on His help in all things.  I can acknowledge that I am equal to but not greater than the plankton that feeds the smaller creatures in the sea.

As I watch an incredible sunset across the lake, in shades of pink, purple, blue and yellow, with the mountains as a backdrop and the birds flying above, I take a deep breath and send out a prayer of thanksgiving to our Lord and Creator. The very same God who loves you unconditionally!
