Buddy, Pal, Chum, Friend, Neighbor

There is an insurance company that has as its jingle, “Like a good neighbor, S…. F… is there.”  Mr. Rogers had an opening song he sang on his show, “…it’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor. Would you be mine? Could you be mine?” One of the Disney well known songs, “…You’ve got a friend in me, from Toy Story” is a favorite of mine. There is also a Christian hymn that is beautiful, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus!” A song by Queen, “You’re My Best Friend,” and Garth Brooks’ hit, “Friends in Low Places.”

So, what is it about being or having a buddy, pal, chum, friend, neighbor that is worthy of songwriting, poetry, psalms, sermons and even Jesus’ teachings? Proverbs 17:17 states, “A friend loves at all times.” Hebrews 13:5, “…Jesus, will never leave you or forsake you.”

There is something amazing about a true friend.  They can care about you, love you, and still share their heart if they believe you need a “wake up call!”  Perhaps their words are harsh, at times, but delivered with love because of the depth of their caring. What kind of friend, buddy, neighbor are you? Do you care enough to stand by through thick and thin?  Jesus is a friend who will never leave you. His love is unconditional. There may be times that your actions and thoughts might require some fine-tuning or even a “jolt,” but His friendship is a gift you can treasure.  Why not share His friendship, it can be a gift for all!
