People here at JOY! know that I discourage the “w” word, which is worry. My close cousins who do not share my last name call us “worry Wuertz’s,” ‘cause that’s what we typically do. Even now my dad confesses that he does tend to view everyday life, news, et cetera in a negative way. His wife, my stepmom usually has a more positive take on the things he frets about.
Remember that delightful song by Bobby McFerrin in the late-1980’s, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy?” It is upbeat, catchy, and really does put you in a good mood. It may not be the most realistic outlook, though. I don’t believe God intends for our lives to be completely, totally happy all the time. Otherwise, would we really need Him? What we do claim in the name of Jesus is JOY! That peace that permeates and transcends our deepest, darkest moments. This is what my dad and most Christians have, -that feeling that nothing is beyond God’s provision and oversight.
On a recent Saturday, ten of us braved the oppressive heat, even in the early morning, to weed around the church. It is never-ending, like painting the Golden Gate Bridge. We could have been at it for a solid month and still have more to do. (I suppose that is my negative Wuertz-ness). As I knelt on my canoe cushion, which quickly became a muddy paste of dirt and sweat, I confess to not being particularly happy. I did feel a certain sense of accomplishment, and the others expressed the same sentiment. We did the best we could, and it did make a difference. Us human creatures realize our limitations.
Happiness and satisfaction in life are fleeting, but the JOY! That springs eternal instills in us less worry, less sweat about the small stuff. We may get certain things done; we may not. If procrastination and energy hamper you in life, take a small measure of you and a huge chunk of God. Blended together, they make food for our souls and bread for our journeys. All within the constant grace of His unconditional love.
