Reminiscing, remembering,…
In high school…the blending of my two favorite things: music and football. Friday nights, half-time shows, cheering on a better-than-average football team…car wash fund-raisers that could best be described as chaotic hijinks…sweater weather…homecoming…spirit tags…the Fall Classic, back when I actually cared about the World Series…
In the Navy: Fleet Week, Navy Birthday Balls, results from rating exams, i.e. getting promoted
In the church – Super Sale, stewardship, Reformation, Conference on Ministry
There’s a lot going for the month of October. The holidays approach, and the season of the church year anticipates the coming of the promised Messiah. Our preparations for this holy time can overwhelm us, not to mention the ongoing stressors of life, bad news, “good news” of the world that we cannot believe as truthfully as the Good News. Good News for us in our daily dying, when answers don’t come, when misery has no ending in sight.
The growing season of Pentecost, as well as spring and summer greenery, is about to give way to a season that need not be bleak. High school and college half-time shows will continue, even as the football fans see them as interruptions in the “real” action. The Navy and the church go through changes. God’s unconditional love remains constant, affirming, sustaining.
