Yesterday the liturgical year came to an end. Next Sunday we begin anew with the first Sunday in Advent. Once more we have made a full trip around the liturgical calendar. How many times have you made this journey? There’s a sameness about the repeated sequence. But through this structured progression, we have once again celebrated the life of our Lord Jesus. So, praise be to God, Amen and Alleluia.
Now we anticipate the new season. Anticipation often brings excitement. It may be the day before a birthday, the day before leaving on a long-awaited trip, the day before a wedding. Sometimes our anticipation is stressful – the day before surgery, or the funeral of a loved one.
Our anticipation of the new liturgical year may also bring mixed emotions. We’re stepping into Advent. It’s a time of preparation. Time to look within ourselves, repent of our sin, and prepare for that beautiful coming of the baby Jesus at Christmas. Christmas will be a celebration. Advent not so much. It’s a time of contemplation and spiritual preparation, but also a season of hope. Our Savior IS coming, and he’s coming for us with his unconditional love.
As we get ready for this new year, we ask the Lord to fill our hearts with peace. Hope you enjoy the musical rendition which follows.
