“Our Lady of Clearwater”

History is replete with Jesus sightings, or some other holy or famous likeness, in all sorts of weird places, even in food items. One of these happened back home in Clearwater, FL twenty-seven years ago today. The timing, coming as it did during Christmas season, should have raised the eyebrows of suspicion.

It was a several-floors tall image of the Virgin Mary, revealed in rainbow-ribbony, shimmering light. Of course, the locals quickly labeled it “a miracle”.

Traffic became even more crazy on “pray for me, I drive on U.S. 19”. Chairs and candles, sacred icons, bouquets of flowers.

We just happened to be back home for the holidays on Christmas leave during our tour at Pearl Harbor, HI.

Was it reclaimed water from the sprinklers? Rosary beads. Worshipers laying prostrate on the ground. Wedding vows exchanged. It was one of the most bizarre spectacles I’ve ever witnessed. A “Woodstock” event. Port-o-Potties. Indulgences. T-shirts.

Were we in the last days?

Was I supposed to feel something deeply spiritual standing there?

Not being Catholic, I could simply shrug my shoulders and conclude,”maybe yes, maybe not.” It did add to the magnum mysterium. My faith convicts me to the extent that every unique believer is shown what they need throughout life to give them hope. It may be a departed loved one’s voice, an object, a vision. I’ve come to believe that everyone experiences God differently and yet the same – which probably makes no sense.

But that’s what faith is, right? Foolishness and the power of God simultaneously. It all gets more amplified, more in focus during holy times. With our wondering eyes and open hearts we wait eagerly, expectantly for our Lord of Joy to make himself known to us – in broken bread and sipped wine.

Brought to you and me with unconditional, non-judgmental love.
