This Baby

It’s been a packed week with church services and family guests-special meals and fun holiday events. I am ready to take a break from the hustle and bustle; ready to spend time contemplating what this season is all about. This song might help me to do just that.

I heard this song in the car last week and sought it out for more details. I found that the lyrics bring a new reality to the Christmas story. Pastor Art’s Christmas Eve sermon touched on some aspects of this song-bringing the real-life aspects of Mary’s pregnancy to our attention.

“This Baby” by Steven Curtis Chapman sings of Jesus as a baby, teething, crying, learning. He leads us to imagine his childhood and youth. These are topics that we lack specific information from Scripture but we know that they had to occur. Chapman’s words bring us to a place of visioning these events. He emphasizes that this baby was God’s own son-very human and very divine.

This is a bouncy, lively song, not much like a hymn, yet filled with profound thoughts and respect. It will make a different kind of meditation for today.

The lessons and enjoyment that we receive from music are still more gifts that we are given by our God who loves us unconditionally. Enjoy!
