Baptism

This month we celebrate the Baptism of our Lord Jesus – His coming to the Jordan River to be baptized by John.

It made me think about my own baptism, well no I don’t remember it, but let’s say I’ve heard the story. In my long white dress and white bonnet, I was brought to the font by my aunt and uncle. I can even picture the black robed pastor. I later knew him well; he was at the church all the while I was growing up. And, I cherish the image of that Baptismal Font — beautiful white marble engraved in German and dated 1888. Generations of children were brought and continue to be brought to the Lord at that very font.

We share a marvelous connection through this Blessed Sacrament. Our Lord Himself was baptized. The generations to come followed his instructions to be baptized. Our grandparents and parents were baptized; we were baptized; our children and grandchildren were baptized.

We are brought to the font, baptized with water and The Word. Baptized because our Lord Jesus instructed us to do so. Baptized because generation after generation have remembered. In a world where everything seems to have changed, to be topsy-turvy to say the least, we cling to the beautiful and blessed Sacrament of Holy Baptism. And through it, we receive God’s precious promise.

Remember the words that were said at your baptism. The pastor called you by name, saying “Child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.”  What a beautiful assurance of God’s unconditional love for YOU!
