Here’s a musical start to your day that will bring a tingle to your heart and wrap you in comfort as you begin your daily routine. Who’s crazy about you, you ask? Why Jesus, of course! God is crazy about you.
This modern-day hymn by singer/song writer Tauren Wells has had some controversial reviews about the theology contained in the lyrics. I have listened closely to the words and read them, as well. I believe that his version of God fits well with mine, but doesn’t it all boil down to the fact that we all try to put God into a man-made box of our own creation?
There are two particular lines that have caused disagreement. Both deal with God’s reaction to our sins. “He’s never been mad at you, He’s only been madly in love,” and, “He’s never held your past against you, He’s only held you close.” I am not going to try to do a theological defense of these words because I agree with them. I agree with them because in light of all the sin and evil in the world, God still sent His Son to redeem us. He loves us unconditionally.
Wells wrote a defense of his song which you can find in this article “Tauren Wells Defends His Song “Crazy About You” Some Radio Stations Won’t Play it” by Michael Foust, ChristianHeadlines.com Contributor, Updated: Dec 01, 2023.
In this quote from the article, Wells points out that this is his view of Jesus: “Does God hate sin? Yes. That’s why He created a solution to save people from sin,” Wells said. “He hates sin. He loves people. He had to create a solution to rescue people from their sins. Why? Because although He hates sin, He loves people. That’s why it’s crazy. And that’s why I used the word ‘crazy’ — to us, it is illogical, it does not make sense the way that Jesus operates. But beneath the anger and the wrath of God is the provision and the love of God which drives Him, compels Him to sacrifice His one and only Son, for the redemption of humanity, you and I.”
I just cannot find anything to disagree with this position. I am so excited about young songwriters and performers who want to bring the love of God to the world! Listen to this moving song and start your day (or end it…) with a smile on your face and a song in your heart.
Remember God loves you unconditionally! And… He is crazy about you, too!

I listened to the song and wished I had the words in front of me! I find it difficult to understand some lyrics with the background music taking over. But I got the “just” of it and agree with what YOU wrote. And if young people will listen to the message…..great!!! Can’t see how some radio stations would not play it??? Blessings on the new generation of Christian musicians! Irene
