The Day(s) of Love

Valentine’s Day is upon us and as one of the biggest commercial holidays of the year, the money will roll out of our pockets to purchase those fleeting things like chocolates, flowers and even jewelry to celebrate and show the romantic love we feel for our Valentine.  It is often called the day of love and Cupid’s arrow has touched all of us at one time or another.

Love always reminds me of 1 Corinthians 13 which is referred to as the “love chapter” in the Bible.  In these verses we learn from Paul what love is and what love is not. We also learn or are reminded if we have forgotten, all our spiritual gifts are from God to be used  to His glory and not our own. We are to show others the love God gives to us. We are not to put a spin on the worth of the gifts He gives us as that can be useless and even destructive if they are not used as God intended in love.

Christians describe this type of love as Agape or unconditional love like the kind we receive every day from our Lord and Savior. It is not a love that comes and goes, it is not a romantic love, but is love that is unconditional in the sense it doesn’t depend so much on the one receiving love but on the commitment of the giver acting in love. Like God is dedicated to giving us love, we too should be faithful in sharing God’s love with others.

Valentine’s Day comes and goes every year, sometimes love comes and goes too,  but what we can be completely sure of is God’s Agape (unconditional love) for us. In Chapter 13 of 1 Corinthians, we read that love never fails. We as Christians may fail at love because we are human, but God’s love is always effective and will last forever and we can live confidently knowing that.

Read or reread 1 Corinthians 13 and marvel at Paul’s words to us about the gift of God’s love.  We are so blessed. Thanks be to God!
