Wednesday

Wednesday is known in popular culture as “hump day.”  Once over the hump of Wednesday it’s supposedly downhill to Friday and the weekend. Who can ever forget the Geico commercial where the camel clomps through the office asking everyone what day of the week it is.

BUT THIS IS HOLY WEEK.  Tomorrow the drama begins unfolding, the Last Supper, the arrest, the floggings, the trials, Peter’s denials, the crucifixion, culminating in the glory of the Resurrection. Wow.

The Gospels mention a sort of timeline for our week. If we put the first day of Passover, the feast of unleavened bread, on our Thursday, events are mentioned for days before and after, but nothing for Wednesday specifically. However, I just learned that Passover would have begun at sunset on Wednesday.

Jesus had been spending his last days teaching in the temple and trying to cram as much knowledge as he could into the disciples. He managed to find time for relaxing with friends in Bethany.  But he also did alot of praying in the gardens of Gethsemane.  We can just imagine what the day before it all began was like for Jesus.  Even though he knew the glorious ending, he also knew the awful things he had to endure to get there.  We know he did this all for us and because of his sacrifice, a glorious salvation awaits us.  So take a deep breath as we prepare over the next four days for the greatest story ever told of God’s wonderful unconditional love for us.
