I came across this quote from Bayard Rustin last year.
“What God requires of us is that we not stop trying.”
Rustin worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Because he was a Quaker, he convinced Dr. King that non-violent protest should be an important part of the Civil Rights movement. But because Rustin was gay, he stayed in the background of the movement. We can imagine what this quote meant to him.
I take it to mean that we keep trying to make things better in our little corner of the world. We can start by making ourselves better, more patient, more loving, kinder and tolerant. Don’t be so quick to honk your car horn if someone doesn’t start after the light changes. Be ready to help someone with their groceries in the store. If you hear someone make political remarks you don’t like, try not to start to an argument. Keep on giving and donating and volunteering wherever you can. Every little thing helps.
We need to keep trying to follow our role model and guide for love and kindness, Jesus Christ. We are so blessed that he loves us unconditionally. Let’s just keep trying to share that love with the world. Let’s not stop trying.
