I came upon a beautiful poem, “Called to Say Yes,” by Edwina Gateley.* I was moved by it even as I read the first stanza:
We are called to say yes.
That the kingdom might
break through
To renew and to
transform
Our dark and groping
world.
As we journey through this life, we are called by our God to say YES to opportunities to serve him. We’re surrounded by so many needs, sorrows, and pain; each a circumstance in which we can offer our hearts and hands to share his love.
The poem goes on to show how our “yes” and help can bring God’s love to the tragedies of our world, to the hatred between nations, to the bitterness between peoples. I want to share with you the final stanza.
We are called to say yes
To this God who reaches
out
And asks us to share
His crazy dream of love.
Ah, it is so. To the thinking of our world, God’s unconditional love must seem crazy. But to be loved by this God and to share it with others, this is the most beautiful life we could ever imagine.
