Every year we examine the events that took place after the resurrection of Jesus. We learn that the Apostles gathered together, and Christ appeared to them. However, Thomas is missing.
When he meets with his friends, they tell him of this extraordinary happening and he is incredulous. Wouldn’t we all be incredulous? This is not a daily event. A man has come back from the dead.
Even with all the preparation that Jesus tried to give his disciples, they cannot understand that here is the fulfillment of the Biblical prophecies and Jesus’ teachings. Here is the Son of God on earth to redeem his people through his death and resurrection.
Did the gathered disciples believe because Christ physically appeared to them? He reminded them of his teachings. He told them and showed them the answers again.
Thomas had the disadvantage of not being with the others at this time, so he has to find a way to certify these events in his mind. When I was a child and heard this passage, I would get a little puffed up because I believed without having to put my hands into Jesus’ side. But those are the views of a child, with experience, I agree with Thomas’ search for proof.
We are all plagued with doubts about God, about the world, about our lives’ outcomes. That’s not a bad situation. Doubt helps me to secure my beliefs. It helps me to make plans that cover a number of situations rather than depending on someone else to step in and save me. I spend time questioning and seeking the answers.
I also accept with sincerity that there are questions regarding the nature of God that I will not understand until I am on the next plane (and not the one to California). Most importantly, I do trust in the unconditional love of God to surround me in all situations-happy and sad, big and small, trivial and significant.
So, while Thomas may take the pejorative rap as the doubter among the followers, I look at him as an example of a faithful disciple who wants to be able to stand firmly in his belief.
I know that God loves you and me unconditionally! Alleluia, He is Risen indeed!
