A Deeper Path

Maybe prayer is like being in the water. Early in life we may learn to float, to keep our head above water. Then comes learning to swim. Still staying above the surface for the most part. Then daring to go under water, learning to hold our breath. Eyes shut or open. Snorkeling or scuba diving, going deeper and deeper. When we were stationed in Hawaii, Amy and I got to experience “snuba”. The tanks were on the boat so we could swim and breathe freely while enjoying the sights.

With prayer, we spend most of our lives spiritually on the surface. We become afraid of the dangers of the deep. The Spirit invites us to go deeper into our souls. If we are brave and trusting, we can let go of anxious fears. We were created for depth.

Churches like ours that follow the liturgical seasons observed Holy Trinity Sunday yesterday. The last piece of the puzzle was put into place, provided by our Redeemer and Lord. He promised his disciples he would send an Advocate, a Helper. That was the Holy Spirit. It gives us counsel, might, and comfort. We can freely go deep. We are no longer praying at God but with God. We dive into the fathomless splendor of grace. Breathe in the Holy Spirit. Feel the sure and certain promise of God’s limitless, unbounded, and unconditional love.
