Unconditional Love

Most mothers have a “labor” story they can choose to share. (Sometimes I wonder why they bombard expectant mothers with those stories, some are not pleasant). Let’s fast forward to the birth.  When your new bundle is placed in your arms, that feeling is unconditional love. A baby so small, so dependent, so precious and LOVE is the word that encompasses it all. That precious little darling begins to grow, as you nurture and guide your sweet child…..but….reality is that precious bundle, as it grows, can be stubborn, or test their independence by talking back or becoming disagreeable. Yes, you still love them, but…..child raising is not for sissys.

My mind flashes to the 2nd Chapter of Luke’s story about Simeon and Anna attending the purification rites for the infant Jesus at the temple.  Their prophetic conversation, their awe, their blessings, their joy simply filled the occasion with unconditional love for Jesus. Simeon had been told by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before having seen the Messiah. Another prophet, Anna, had stayed at the temple fasting and worshipping for many, long years of her widowhood. She, too, poured blessings on Jesus and his holy family. Mary and Joseph were surely feeling their hearts swell. This dear Savior was given to them to raise and love unconditionally.  Jesus, Himself, pours out unconditional love to each and everyone of us. The perfect example of love in its purest form. Perhaps, this is the story more of us should share instead of the throes and woes of labor and child-rearing.  The gift of our Lord and His unconditional love. Share that good news, it is life-changing!
