Back to School

If my source is correct, today’s the day that the kids in Marion County head back to school.  I know it seems early, especially to a generation that went back to school after Labor Day.  Nevertheless, buses are running, heavy backpacks are toted, kids find out which friends are in their class, and educators have a first look at the children they will teach this year.  It’s a pivotal day in the school year.

In my few years as a teacher, I appreciated this new beginning.  Last year’s challenges were gone; the slate was wiped clean.  Later, working in the business world, I missed this.  Projects and tasks were continuous.  Even a vacation just meant my desk would be piled higher when I returned.

A clean slate is a wonderous thing.  Jesus understood that.  He preached that God was willing to wipe the slate clean for those who have sinned.  “I’ll forever wipe the slate clean of their sins.”  Hebrews 10:17. (The Message) If we confess our sins, God WILL forgive us.  He will make us clean from all the wrong things we have done.  Now that’s a clean slate that is available to all of us, and it’s the best clean slate of all.

As I write this, I realize that a younger generation than mine will have no clue as to what a “slate” is.  Those of us who experienced that blackboard on a daily basis, recall being asked to erase it and even to stay after school to wash it clean.  Call me old-fashioned, but I still like the image.  Apparently, St. Paul did as well.
