Roots and Wings

Several weeks ago I was touched by a devotion from “The Word In Season” daily devotion booklet.  I quote this without knowing an author to credit for it:

“This life is a balance between having roots and wings.  We’re rooted in our understanding of God’s purpose for human life, but we’re also given wings to explore the many ways God will continue to transform our hearts and reshape our lives.  Living in trust allows God to do amazing work in us.”

Soon after reading this, Pastor Roy preached on Embracing the Past, Living Today, and Envisioning the Future.  This, indeed, is the joy as well as the responsilibity of living a Christian life.  We learn from the past in God’s Word and in history (His Story), and this gives us roots in faith and knowledge, enabling us to live today to fulfill God’s purpose in our life.  And we know what God’s promise is for our future.  We can envision our eternal life in heaven, even with our imperfect vision because of our roots in faith and in God’s Word.  This gives us wings to explore God’s will for us.

What shall we do?  Keep digging those roots deeper by reading and studying God’s Word for us.  Embrace what we learn there.  Live today as a disciple of Christ, using the resources God has given us to care for our human life; share our faith with others, espeically with those who do not yet know God, and be open and ready for whatever purpose God may still have for us.  And finally envision the promises God has given us for eternity.  We can use our wings to continue growing and expanding our sights.  While we can’t imagine what heaven will be like, we know it will be a place of peace, surrounded by all the saints who have kept the faith– no pain, no tears– and we will meet our God and King with songs of priase and thanksgiving.  Forever!

Read Ephesians 3:17-19 and Psalm 145, and remember: God loves YOU unconditionally.
