Cell Phone Mania?

I’m guilty as charged . . . I’ve got the cell phone mania! It’s always with me and it’s probably with excessive frequency that I check in. I would be hard-pressed to get along without it.
Cell phones became popular in the 1990’s. Now we all seem to be glued to this handy little device. It’s still hard to believe that a 5 inch gizmo that fits in the palm of my hand can allow me to text with family and friends, read and send emails, take photos, maintain a calendar, play games, read the news, and even get turn by turn directions to anywhere I wish to go. Who could have dreamed of such a possibility????

Considering how significantly I rely on my cell phone, my attention was drawn to a recent observation made by Pope Francis. Speaking in St. Peter’s Square, he suggested – what if we checked our Bible as often as we check our cell phone? After all, the Word of God is always topical and effective. I quote from his text, “What would happen if we turned back when we forgot it, if we opened it more times a day, if we read the message of God contained in the Bible the way we read the messages on our cell phones?”

As one observer said, if you really can’t bring yourself to put down your cellphone, there are apps that offer Bible passages and devotions for you each day. You can have your Google and your Gospel too!

Well, I’ll be keeping my cell phone and I’ll continue to check in with regularity. But just maybe I’ll think again about my messages from God’s Word. Just maybe I could check in more than a few minutes each day. Maybe I’ll think of His messages as texts or emails straight from the heart of God. Would that make them seem more relevant to me? It’s a thought.

You too have messages from your loving Lord. They’re waiting for you in His Holy Word. They’re words that can encourage, support, and guide you through this journey of life. Don’t miss out. Remember: God Himself inspired these messages for you. God loves you. He loves you unconditionally.
