Ah, I remember Sunday mornings after church, watching the Sonny Fox Show. How we loved watching. A favorite game in that era was “Telephone.” Sonny would have several kids line up and whisper a message to the first. They would then pass the message on, each whispering to the next. Well, as it went from kid to kid it changed, until by the last child it was transformed into something unrecognizable.
Like a lot of Sonny’s shows, this also had a message for adults. When we spread rumors or gossip errors typically accumulate in the retelling. The subject of our gossip is hurt, sometimes irreparably. This is truly a sinful practice.
Having seen Sonny’s show first hand, we learned that we should think before we speak, and only speak that which is truth. We should promote the cause of Christ, which is to be forgiving and tolerant of other’s faults. We know that we are all sinners in need of God’s grace and forgiveness. We must refrain from gossip, which can ruin someone’s respectability and life.
Gossip is a sin Satan loves to exploit! When tempted to talk about someone’s faults, first examine your own. I’m sure from my own experience you will not utter a phrase! AMEN?
