Summertime . . . I’m blessed to enjoy some travels. It’s been a year since I headed north. Time spent with extended family is precious; our moments together seem so few. We have so many precious memories, but children grow quickly. Their interests and activities change; and yes, I want to hear all about them! When they were younger, we were very close. I hope they’re still willing to spend time with this “old lady”.
Being the “oldest generation” is still unfamiliar territory. If memory serves me, it means that we have slowed down, move about at a measured pace – well, we’ve got that covered! If advancing age means that we have gained wisdom – ouch, I’m not so sure we can claim to be wise! But, I’ll admit that we are wiser now that we were when we started this journey together.
I now live with the firm assurance that God loves me unconditionally, that He loves my children unconditionally, that He loves my grandchildren unconditionally. Ah, but how often do I share that awesome message with them? I can only pray that on this trip I will find opportunities to “share the good news” with those who are most loved by me.
The Psalmist says it well, “So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.” Psalm 71:18.
And again, “We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.” Psalm 78:4
Our God is a gracious God. From the very beginning, He has been present for one generation to the next. Now that’s good news that’s definitely worth sharing!
In whatever generation you find yourself, never forget: God loves YOU unconditionally.
