Day by Day

When I was in college a “few” years ago, I had the opportunity of performing in the brand new musical Godspell,  based on the Gospel of Matthew.  It was then and still remains my favorite role and I loved every bit of it.  The music, the dancing and the script spoke to me in a special way and have stayed with me all these years later.  Our cast worked on this production for five months before performing it for the public and it was a smashing success on many levels.

I was handed the song Day by Day as a solo.  It was easy to sing and there were few words to learn as the lyrics were repeated as a constant reminder of their importance. “Day by day.  Day by day.  Oh, dear Lord, three things I pray.  To see thee more clearly, love these more dearly, follow thee more nearly, day by day.”  This was a very uncomplicated message taken from a prayer ascribed to the 13th Century English Bishop, Saint Richard of Chichester.

The prose of this prayer was written hundreds of years ago. Godspell and the music with the same words was released 48 years ago but the message remains timeless.  The missive conveyed is just as meaningful today and maybe even more important in 2020.  These words hold the same importance…they haven’t changed and are exactly what the Lord wanted for his followers hundreds of years ago and forty eight years ago and continues to ask of us today. See me, love me and follow me, not just when it is convenient for you but day by day, every day.  God loves us unconditionally and the repeated words of this song assure us of His promise if we follow these words and live our lives in Christ.  Nothing complicated or difficult to understand and how wonderful our world would be if we lived our lives this way day by day.
