I heard a song this week, it was new to me but perhaps you’ve heard it. The chorus was so simple, yet so profound.
My heart is an open space
for you to come and have your way
I’m open; I’m open.
Thinking about those words, I wondered. Is my heart an open space? Do I wake each morning with an open heart to go wherever God leads me that day? Or is my heart crowded with my own choices and dreams for the day? Have I learned the “Christian way” so well that I follow its precepts, just assuming that I’m listening to my God? Maybe, maybe not. Is my heart open to God’s leading each new day?
Open is the key word. Other familiar hymns carry a similar message. “Open the eyes of my heart Lord.” “Open my eyes that I may see.” Being open to God means that I need to put His plan above my own. What a privilege to open our hearts and be filled with the Holy Spirit, not just once, but filled anew each and every day. Such a blessing from our God of unconditional love.
This contemporary Christian/Gospel song was recorded in 2019 by the group, Housefires. The music that follows may be a little longer than usual, but if you’re willing, perhaps it’s a worthwhile Lenten meditation.
