Who We Can Become

Our forty-day journey through Lent continues.  Our thoughts may focus on what we give up doing and/or on what we begin doing.

I recently read a quote that struck me as both simple and profound.  “Let today be the day you give up who you’ve been for who you can become.”   Wow!  That takes in a lot.  Wherever we’re at, changing from “who we’ve been” to “who we can become” takes a big leap of faith.   Can’t do that on our own, can we?

What better time than Lent to reflect on who we can become with the help of God.  We think of God’s “breath of life,” the breath of the Holy Spirit that dwells in us, the breath that can make us “who we can become”

To quote from the lyrics of “Breathe on Me, Breath of God” by Edwin Hatch:

“Breathe on me, breath of God;
until my heart is pure,
until my will is one with yours
to do and to endure.”

Can we give up our old selves? Can we open ourselves to the Spirit that can mold us and change us?  Will we? That outpouring of unconditional love and support is ours, there for me and for you!

I hope you enjoy this musical rendition of the hymn by Edwin Hatch.  (1835-1889)
