Listen

According to Wikipedia, Paul Johannes Tillich (1886-1965) was a German-American Christian existentialist philosopher and Lutheran Protestant theologian who is widely regarded as one of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century. He said, “The first duty of love is to listen.”

I tease my husband, that I think sometimes when I am speaking, he hears, “Blah, blah, blah,” instead of my true message.  LOL The “art of listening,” requires effort.

Sometimes the “art of listening” is referred to as active listening. If you are giving someone your attention, you listen without other things going on in your mind.  Giving someone your full attention does, in fact, take effort.  You cannot be distracted with your to-do list for the day, or your lack of interest in the person or their conversation, you must make the effort.  Why?  Listening builds trust.  Listening can even lessen conflicts and arguments because you have put out the effort to “hear” the other side (not necessarily agree, but you heard it with genuine effort to listen to an opposing view.)  Listening can improve difficult situations, but the effort must be real.

When you meander through nature do you listen to it?  There are times on walks, not only is there a cacophony of birds chirping, squirrels scampering up trees, but I have heard the flap of birds’ wings and the buzz of small insects.  I was actively listening not just absorbed in thought.  During your quiet times, listen to your own breath moving in and out. Calmness prevails.

Listen to the concerns of others.  Listen for stories told to you and how they may relate to you or how you may interject your thoughts and opinions.  Listen for prayers and prayer opportunities.  Listen for God’s still small voice.  Listen for love. Follow Tillich’s advice, …the first duty of love is to listen.  God never tires of listening to you and loving you unconditionally.  Make the effort!
