The Shadow of the Almighty

Psalm 91:1  “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”  What does it mean to rest in His shadow?

Here in Florida the summer sun is harsh.  Walking under the midday sun, we long for the comfort of shade.  Any shade will do.  You may have experienced a time when all you wanted was some shade to escape the sun’s powerful heat.

God’s shadow is like that welcome shade.  His shadow provides not only a cover and protection, but comfort and peace.  The shadow of the Almighty brings to mind how a mother bird casts her wings over her young to provide shade and protection.

Abiding under the shadow of God means choosing to make it our home.  We are not just to be temporary dwellers, who just come and go for a moment’s respite. When we choose to be with God, we have the full intention to stay and never depart!  He is so close he can hear our whisper.  Knowing that he is with us and sensing his shadow, we can’t help but be filled with the peace and joy that can be found only in his unconditional love.

Following is a musical rendition of “Hiding in the Shadow of God,” by Heather Sorenson. I hope you enjoy it.
