Judge Not

I ran across this little story when I was doing some research for another writing project I have in the works.  I thought it was very well said in a clever way and decided to share it with you.

A young couple moved into a new house.  The next morning while they were eating breakfast, the young woman saw the neighbor lady hanging her washing out on the line. “That laundry is not very clean. She doesn’t know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs a better soap  powder.”

The husband looked on, remaining silent.

Every time the neighbor hung her washing out to dry, the young woman made the same comment. A month later the young woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband, “Look, she finally learned how to wash correctly.  I wonder who taught her this?”

The husband said, “I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows.”

And so it goes with life…What we see when watching others depends on the clarity of the window through which we look. So, don’t be too quick to judge others, especially if your perspective of life is clouded by anger, jealously and negativity.

“Judging a person does not define who they are, it defines who you are.”

Judging others is a very easy thing to do and just like it mentions in the above piece, it happens for various reasons. We sometimes do it to make ourselves look better. Maybe we are angry with that person or just jealous of them. If we point out their faults, ours don’t seem so bad or so we tell ourselves. Does it make us feel better? In the long run, usually not and we get our comeuppance like the young woman in the story.

Luke 6:37 is a reminder of the consequences of judging others: Do not judge others and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others and you will be forgiven.

God’s unconditional love for us has provided this forgiveness through the death of his son Jesus who took on the sins of the world, thus forgiving our sins.  Our job is simple. Don’t judge others, do forgive others and do accept God into your heart and ask for help in all things.  He is there just waiting.  Thanks be to God.
