A Clare Benediction

“May the Lord show his mercy upon you;
may the light of his presence be your guide:
may he guard you and uphold you;
may his spirit be ever by your side.” *

This beautiful benediction, composed by John Rutter, is titled “A Clare Benediction.”  It has been recorded numerous times by various groups.   But why the title?   It seems that John Rutter had a long association with Clare College, Cambridge.  He studied there in the 1960s and returned as director of the Chapel Choir in the 1970s.  He composed the anthem in 1998 in honor of his alma mater.

There’s great comfort in a benediction, assuring us that as we go out into the world, we do not go alone. The lyrics of this benediction ask God’s blessing on you when you sleep and when you wake; that his kindness will surround you on your life’s journey; and that he will bless your loved ones, your friends, and the stranger at your door.

The rendition I have chosen was performed at a Christmas concert in Sapporo, Japan in 2013 by the Asahigaoka High School Choir with Octavian Saunier as organist.  The clear sound of the voices wonderfully conveys the simple message of the Clare Benediction.

I invite you to listen, remembering that this blessing comes to you from the unconditional love of your God and Savior.
