The Force of a New Hope

The sci-fi geek in me comes out…

We all remember the “first” or “original” Star Wars movie, which
came out in 1977. It was actually Episode IV in the saga, but that’s neither
here or there. We are introduced to Luke Skywalker, toiling away in the
desolate desert for his uncle and aunt. (“God story” connection #1 –
wilderness, desert). Enter Obi-Wan Kenobi, or “Old Ben” as the locals call
him. It is no coincidence that he finds Luke with the cute little droid R2-D2
– with a message for Ben. God story connection #2 – Moses and the burning
bush. Obi-Wan knows that the time for action has finally arrived, after years
of being in hiding from the evil empire.

It is like the nudge of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Happenings that at
first glance might be perceived as coincidences are anything but. Rather,
they are invitations, “God-winks”, to turn aside and listen to the flame that
does not consume. We recognize the Spirit much like the Jedi recognize the
Force. We can see how much subliminal theology and Christian occurred in
George Lucas’ mind. Knocking on an opening door. Waiting for your pitch.
The living force is God’s Holy Spirit giving us new life and new hope. An
unconditional love that keeps on encouraging and sustaining us as we travel
through the wilderness toward our promised future.
