Follow God and Not Your Heart

Many people today are told to “follow your heart” as if our feelings will always lead us in the right direction. Our hearts can be emotional, impulsive, and easily influenced by fear, anger, pride, or temptation. If we only follow our feelings, we may end up making choices that hurt ourselves or others. Jeremiah, a prophet called by God to warn Judah of the coming of judgement and urge him to repent spoke these words in Jeremiah 17:9 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?”

This message was given to the people of Judah for their idolatry, unfaithfulness and disobedience warning them their nation would face destruction through exile. But, ways of correcting this behavior were also given. King Soloman shared wise words for young men and future leaders who were preparing for positions of responsibility. “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life”. Proverbs 4:23

These weighty and wise words still apply to us in our daily living even if we are not powerful leaders. We all have responsibilities in our lives. God loves us unconditionally and His guidance is based on truth, wisdom and perfect love. When we follow God through prayer, Scriptures, and obedience, we gain peace, direction and strength to face life’s challenges.

In the end, following God brings greater joy and purpose than following our own hearts ever could. His way always leads to what is best for us. Thanks be to God!
