“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”  Psalm 51:10

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”  Matthew 5:8

Being pure in heart sounds very lofty, but how do we accomplish this?  Well, we don’t.  It’s God’s work in us, not our work for God.

What is a pure heart? A pure heart doesn’t harbor resentments, while showing forgiveness.  It isn’t full of pride, while projecting humility.  The pure heart is the same on the outside as on the inside.  It’s not perfect but is directed towards God.  It’s a process.   It’s not the purity of innocence; it’s God’s continued refining work in our human heart and soul. 

There’s a paradox to this beatitude.  Being completely pure of heart seems utterly impossible.  But that’s just it.  Jesus wasn’t giving us a requirement.  He was painting a picture of one who has been transformed by God’s grace, blessed by his unconditional love, a heart that belongs wholly to God.
