At least, that’s the way I learned it in school. Apparently, that’s not really the case here in Florida. My roses were glorious in early April, but soon summer’s heat will take its toll. And those “showers” will arrive in the heat of summer, expected as each hot and humid day comes to a close.
Yet even the old cliches have some truth. The showers that come down on our lives, often bring blessings to us, unexpected blessings. There’s an old spiritual song, “There Shall Be Showers of Blessing.” Below are the texts to the first and last stanzas. How comforting are the words, “There SHALL be seasons refreshing.” And how appropriate right to our current day, “Oh, that TODAY they might fall.” In the midst of troubles and trials we turn to the unconditional love of our dear Savior, asking that he might refresh us with showers of blessing. And if we’re honest with ourselves, we must offer our deepest thanks for all of the “showers of blessing” we have received.
There shall be showers of blessing:
This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.
There shall be showers of blessing:
Oh, that today they might fall,
Now as to God we’re confessing,
Now as on Jesus we call!
The hymn was composed by D. W Whittle, also published under the pseudonym El Nathan. It can be found in the African Methodist Episcopal Church Hymnal. The video I have included for you is sung by a 300-voice mass choir directed by Prabhu Darairaj.
