Forge Ahead

What exactly, I wondered, does it mean to forge ahead.  It’s more than just moving forward; which implies just a continuous movement in the chosen direction.  To “forge” seems to mean moving forward with determination and speed, especially in the face of obstacles or uncertainty.

Several Old Testament prophets “forged ahead.”  They stand out for their boldness and willingness to go against the grain.  They were unafraid to proclaim God’s word even when it was unpopular or dangerous.

Jeremiah confronted the king and leaders about their idolatry and injustice.  Even though he was ignored and persecuted, he forged ahead and trusted God’s plan, even in exile.

Amos, a shepherd, boldly condemned social injustice and idolatry.  He forged ahead by speaking against the political and religious elite.

Jonah, who initially resisted God’s calling, ultimately forged ahead and delivered God’s message to a foreign capital.

And what does it mean for you and me?  I think it means pursuing whatever it is that God has called us to do, not timidly but with all our effort and energy.

God loves us continually and unconditionally; it’s not a wavering timid love.  Can we return his love by “forging ahead” in our calling?
